Now, this acquired engine was not quite up to the mark. It's sole purpose was to get us into qualifications, most likely in last place and into the first round. This would guarantee us 10 points from qualifications and 100 points as first round looser in eliminations.
Nigel worked tirelessly to make this much less impressive engine fit into the chassis and adapted it in many different ways to make it work. He eventually fired it up, it ran ok. We were doing everything we could.
We spent days going through different scenarios of what could or may happen and after a few nights of less then perfect sleep we found ourselves at the track. Nigel warmed it up and it smoked like a barbecue and sounded less than impressive amongst the other cars in the Super Modified pits. We eventually made it to the second qualifying session and with no burnout Nigel staged the car and sauntered up the track with a 17 second run.
By the end of the day we were firmly in last position gaining our 10 points. Belinda had finished in 3rd which has left us with a 182 point lead.
The elimination pairs were organised and we were against number 1 qualifier Fred who had run an impressive 7.4 after being out for most of the season updating his chassis. Belinda was paired against Tim Mugridge and the times were fantastically close. Tim had run a 7.523 and Belinda a 7.522. If Tim could knock Belinda out in the first round we would win the SPRC championship, but if she made it into the final we had lost.>br> Tim and Belinda staged against each other as Nigel pulled around behind them ready to race next, watching his fate unveil before him. The lights burned down and there was a long pause and then Tim was off followed by Belinda. Belinda gained on Tim and as they reached the finish line it was hard to see who was in front. The win lights shone out from the board at the end, it was Tim!!!! He had managed to beat her and secure us our Championship. Belinda's car had bogged of the line and Tim had beaten her with a 7.70 to her run of 7.50 a new PB. Nigel and Fred were then in stage, Fred tore up the track as Nigel looked like he was on a Sunday afternoon drive as he tootled through with a 15 second Et. We gained our 100 points first round which now we didn't even need.
It was all over, season ended and every possible championship under our belt. A very successful year.
Thank you to all the crew, Graham, Steve, Kyle, Dale, Jordan and Milly. To all of our sponsors who make this possible and to Martin and Ruth Curbishley for all your help and support. We have had a fantastic year.
We now stand back and look at what we have left of our car and plan for the future. With the damage sustained we feel it unlikely we will be competing in the 2010 championships...but you never know!!!
