Always a more relaxed affair we were pleased with the promising forecast for the weekend ahead. With signing on and scrutineering occurring on Saturday morning there was not the normal rush to prepare for the weekend . Nigel had set up camp on Friday morning and we headed over to the Pod after school to organise the trailer and get the coffee facilities ready. After a blissful day of sunshine we were greeted by a horrendous rain storm which left the pits completed flooded with water. We headed to the pod shop for dinner and the humid weather had dried the pits on our return.
After following the safety proceedings we were ready for our first race by 11.00am. Due to minimal classes at this event we had open qualifying sessions in allotted time slots and we managed to head down to the start line in a organised manner with the rest of the class. Paired against Martin Curbishley in his stunning 1963 Corvette we were anxious to see whether the on going suspension issues had been resolved. Oh no, they hadn't an ET of 11.30 proved that and Martin's run in the other lane had also been less than perfect. Back to the pits for a team discussion and a change in the suspension again!!
Following some expert advice from a god in America changes were made and our next run soon came around. We were paired this time against Tim Mugridge who had failed to make the first run due to water pump issues. This time our run was much improved with a beautiful steady launch ending in a 7.65@ 179 mph. Into the number one qualifying spot and much happier, we ate cake. We had one more qualifying run to come and paired against Belinda it should have been a great sight for the enthusiastic truck show spectators. Belinda's run was close to our number one spot with a 7.67 but problems off the line again left us with a disappointing 9.80. End of qualifying and despite our on going tyre spin issues we had managed to maintain our number one spot.
Straight into eliminations on Sunday morning and spectators were everywhere. The huge array of trucks had pulled in a large crowd and the sunshine was helping too. Interested spectators bemused by the drag racing cars were filled with enthusiasm as they were introduced to this new form of motor sport. First round of eliminations saw the grandstand packed and we were paired against Martin. We had lane choice and in the right lane we had advantage over Martin, as many racers had encountered problems with the left lane over the weekend. Despite this Martin managed a great time of 7.90 @ 172 mph but Nigel pulled off the win with a respectable 7.64 @ 180 mph.
Through the first round we were then on a bye run into the final but Belinda had really pulled it out of the bag running a 7.58 in her first round. We needed a good run in the bye to beat Belinda's time allowing us lane choice in the final.
The bye run was less than perfect, still experiencing tyre spin during the run and ending with a 7.67 @ 179 mph. Belinda was having an awesome day and ran a 7.59 knocking Tim Mugridge out of the race and gaining that all important lane choice for the final.
After this the team decided to go for bust and made some major changes to the car. All or nothing was the new out look in the pits. Belinda was on a roll and without major changes to make drastic improvement we new we would be unable to catch her in the final. Despite these changes the left hand lane took Nigel as victim and after heading towards the centre line in a big way Nigel had to lift his foot and Belinda took the win with a 7.65 to Nigel's 8.08.
Frustrated and exhausted the team de-camped and head scratching began again in preparation for the Bug Jam in 3 weeks time.
