After the disaster of the Euro Finals last year financially and emotionally we decided to take a year off from the racing calender. We were devastated after the fatal demise of the engine and exhausted from the emotional upheaval it caused.
We had a quiet winter with warm relaxing evenings by the fire and quality family time, which we all enjoyed. Every evening Nigel would come home from work and stay there until bed time, what bliss. Well, weird bliss. Always under my feet, moaning about the television programmes, eating comfort chocolate. January, February, March...he was still there and so were the pounds of chocolate he had eaten. . Easter came and we decided to go off to Tenerife for a lovely warm and sunny holiday. "Ha ha" we said "imagine everyone at Santa Pod". "oooh, I bet it is so cold". Fooling ourselves we imagined we were ok. We thought we were better off than those obsessive drag racers. We were in a beautiful hot country relaxing by the pool, we weren't missing that silly sport. Yeah right.
By 9.30am on Good Friday we were on the Internet seeing what was going on. We text our friends for updates and permanently talked about the racing...which we were missing so much!!The whole of the Easter weekend Nigel kept leaving his sun bed to put a euro in the slot and watch the regular updates on eurodragster.com. His tan greatly suffered.
We soon decided we couldn't do it, we had to get back asap. Due to the extent of the damage to the old engine it was going to be a total rebuild. Nigel had travelled to Orlando back in December 2009 to visit the PRI show hoping to gain some more sponsorship packages and meet with contacts he already had in the USA. Being a very likeable chap he returned home following a very successful trip and this stood us in a fabulous position for beginning our new project.
Weeks and weeks of phone calls followed and written lists of engine spec and parts required were taking shape and getter longer and longer. Sterling into dollars and it wasn't long before parts started arriving from various companies Stateside. Boxes and packages arrived from various UK sources too and the excitement began to build again. Nigel spent many nights not sleeping and rebuilt the engine whilst laying in bed...it has been complete tens if not hundreds of times already!
The hardest bit has been coping with the impatience, waiting for custom parts to arrive and now we are enveloped by the last minute thrash which every drag racer endures during the last few weeks before the first meeting after any breakage or repair. I have hardly seen Nigel for the last two weeks, much more like normal and the sparkle has reappeared in his eyes. Having been teched and now waiting for our dyno session we are determined to be present at the European Finals 2010. New engine, new combination. Still naturally aspirated of course. Lets see what happens next. A huge thank you to all our Sponsors old and new and special thanks to Steve Clark at Nimbus.
